Last week in Geneva the Internet elite gathered to celebrate the inaugural class of inductees for the Internet Hall of Fame at a very fitting moment. The Internet is experiencing a coming of age as not only has it surpassed television in terms of daily consumer usage, but it also is flexing its political muscle in capitols across the globe.

It was not too long ago that the tech industry was almost indifferent about Washington. Ultimately when it did engage replica watches, as it did in 2006 in its first major public policy skirmish over net neutrality, it ended up being crushed by the telecom industry despite strong grass roots support. The industry’s progression from political flyweight to heavyweight was on full display earlier this year in the battle over the Stop Online Piracy Act (”SOPA”) which the New York Times called its “political coming of age.”

Republicans believed that betting on Goliath (in this case the entertainment industry) in a battle with David was not only a safe bet but they had hoped to score some political revenge by making a “political piñata” out of Google in the process. After the largest online protest in history in which thousands of sites went black, however, 13 Senators flipped from supporting to opposing the bill including SOPA co-sponsors and David once again had felled a giant.

Months later, when Pakistan had the audacity to openly solicit proposals for Internet censoring software replica watches, activists again mobilized to pressure U.S. software companies not to participate forcing Pakistan to abandon its plan after no bids were submitted.

As attendees arrived in Geneva, the European Parliament was debating the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement which has been characterized by some as “SOPA on steroids” and whose fate was in jeopardy after thousands demonstrated throughout Europe. Across the Atlantic, Washington was abuzz with “Cyber Week” which culminated in a rush vote in the House of Representatives on the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (”CISPA”). CISPA, which would permit online providers to share information with other entities or the government on cyber security matters without prior notice or consent and “notwithstanding any other provision of law,” has also been a target of criticism from the net community (aka “netizens”).

Unlike SOPA, however, Google, Facebook and other Internet companies support CISPA as it would immunize them from liability for sharing information. As a result, the battle over CISPA was the first test of a new political force in Washington — Netizens. Netizens are in essence a citizens’ brigade connected via social media and blogs such as Ars Technica and TechDirt who are ably mobilized and led by dedicated groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation replica watches, FreePress and others.

While netizens succeeded in putting CISPA supporters on the defensive and getting the White House to issue a veto threat mainly over the bill’s lack of privacy protections, its sponsors would not yield and were able to ram the bill through the House in a rush vote Thursday night. Goliath, after all, rarely loses two in a row (although six sponsors ultimately voted against the bill).

In passing the measure, the House not only refused to address the privacy concerns raised but instead expanded the areas in which information may be shared beyond just cyber security — a move which is adding fuel to the opposition as the bill moves to the Senate.

There is much to praise in the achievements of the men and women who gathered in Geneva for the Hall of Fame ceremony and who are responsible for the development and growth of the internet. People like Vint Cerf who is considered the “Father of the Internet,” Al Gore whose legislation paved the infrastructure for the information superhighway and Craig Newmark who has made a name both as an internet pioneer and e-philanthropist.

As impressive as these feats may be, empowering citizens to speak forcefully in the corridors of power in Washington and across the globe is equally amazing if sustained. When authoritarian despots’ greatest fear has shifted from worrying that their enemies might get access to weapons to fearing they will get access to YouTube, you have changed the world immeasurably.

The Hall of Fame ceremonies in Geneva gave us reason to pause and reflect on the achievements of the Internet to date. The debates in Washington and Strasbourg, however, call us as netizens to be vigilant and engaged in defending and protecting this vital tool of liberty.

Extortion charges against a group of Hells Angels bikies, including Sydney chapter boss Felix Lyle, have been withdrawn in a Sydney court.

Mostafa Jouayde Machine Gun Tattoo, Selim Kocak, Jeffrey Sahyoun, Nonda Stamatakis and Lyle had been accused of attempting to extort cash from Terry Mullens, the owner of a luxury car yard at Burwood, in Sydney's inner west.

They had been charged with demanding with menace between July 7 and 11 Tattoo Of Guns, 2011, a silver BMW M3 valued at $49,000 from Mr Mullens at his dealership on Parramatta Road.

They had also been charged with participating in a criminal group and intimidation with intent to cause fear or physical harm in relation to the incident.

All five pleaded not guilty to the charges last year.

In Burwood Local Court on Tuesday, police prosecutor Daniel McMahon withdrew all charges against the men.

He said the decision was taken because of recent developments, but told the court he did not want to go into them at this stage.

In a discussion over costs, counsel for Stamatakis, Paul Hardin, said police had failed to properly investigate the credibility of Mr Mullens, who was to be a star witness for the prosecution.

Jouayde, 31, and Kocak, 25, were present in court for the decision and smiled broadly as the charges against them were dropped, before leaving prior to the argument over costs.

Jouayde, president of the Hells Angels Parramatta chapter, last year obtained a one-off extension to his bail curfew so he could marry his fiancee, Susie Arida, in a lavish wedding ceremony in Sydney.

Lyle, 54, president of the Sydney Chapter of the Hells Angels Tattoo Guns, was not present at court.

Magistrate Brian Maloney adjourned the hearing on costs to May 30.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States and Japan announced on Thursday a revised agreement on streamlining the U.S. military presence on Okinawa that will shift 9,000 Marines from the southern Japanese island to Guam and other Asia-Pacific sites.

The new plan, unveiled days before Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda meets President Barack Obama in Washington, helps the allies work around the central but still-unresolved dispute over moving the Futenma air base from a crowded part of Okinawa to a new site that has vexed relations for years.

“I am very pleased that, after many years, we have reached this important agreement and plan of action. I applaud the hard work and effort that went into crafting it,” U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a statement.

“Japan is not just a close ally, but also a close friend.”

Under the agreement, 9,000 U.S. Marines will be relocated. Five thousand will go to Guam and the rest to other sites such as Hawaii and Australia, a joint U.S.-Japanese statement said.

The updated version of a long-delayed 2006 plan was needed to achieve “a U.S. force posture in the Asia-Pacific region that is more geographically distributed, operationally resilient and politically sustainable,” the statement said.

Snags over Okinawa had raised questions about the viability of the Obama administration’s strategy of shifting U.S. forces from other regions to the Asia-Pacific to deal with nuclear saber-rattling by North Korea, the rapid military buildup of China and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

Friction over U.S. bases intensified after the 1995 gang rape of a Japanese schoolgirl by U.S. servicemen. The case sparked widespread protests by Okinawans, who had long resented the American presence due to crime, noise and deadly accidents.

There are about 47,000 U.S. troops in Japan under a 1960 bilateral security treaty.

Okinawa, occupied by the United States from 1945-72, accounts for less than 1 percent of Japan’s total land but hosts three-quarters of the U.S. military facilities in the country in terms of land area.

“This has been … bogged down for years, but now we have been able to come up with a new approach de-linking the Futenma relocation from other elements, like moving out Marine forces to Guam and returning some parts of Okinawa,” said Ichiro Fujisaki, Japan’s ambassador to the United States.

“Things are going to start moving,” he told a gathering at a think tank in Washington.

Kurt Campbell Cheap Chanel Dresses, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said the deal was discussed widely with U.S. lawmakers, who had refused to fund the overhaul on Okinawa until the Futenma deadlock was resolved and the administration fully explained how the move would fit overall U.S. strategy.

“We think it breaks a very long stalemate … that has plagued our politics, that has clogged both of our systems,” said Campbell.

“REBALANCING” TOWARD ASIA-PACIFIC

A senior State Department official said: “This is really a key component of our strategic rebalancing toward the Asia-Pacific region.”

The new policy has also entailed closer U.S. military ties with the Philippines, Australia and Singapore.

The agreement includes a $3.1 billion cash commitment from Japan for the move to Guam as well as for developing joint training ranges on Guam and on Tinian and Pagan in the U.S.-controlled Northern Mariana Islands.

The previous agreement on the move to Guam had Japan providing $6.1 billion in support, with $2.8 billion in cash and the rest in financing arrangements. The two sides agreed to limit that to $3.1 billion from Japan because of the smaller footprint the Marines will have in Guam

Campbell acknowledged that more work needed to be done, including finding a replacement for Futenma.

Proposed replacement sites for Futenma on the subtropical island that lies between Japan’s main islands and Taiwan have met strong local opposition. At the same time Tokyo was in political disarray, with six prime ministers in six years.

“Does this agreement answer every question? It does not. Is there more programmatic and technical work that is necessary? Yes,” said Campbell.

“But at a fundamental level Buy DKNY Dresses, we think this agreement moves the ball very substantially down the field in a way that no one would have anticipated a few months ago,” he said.

Separating the move to Guam from the Futenma issue frees up the allies to work more on cybersecurity, space, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations and ballistic missile defense, a senior U.S. Defense Department official said.

Senators Carl Levin, John McCain and Jim Webb – top members of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee who had frozen Okinawa funding until their budgetary and strategic questions were answered – said some of their concerns had been addressed.

“We still have many questions about the specific details of this statement and its implications for our force posture in the Asia-Pacific region,” they said in a statement, which also vowed to keep working on “a mutually beneficial, militarily effective, and fiscally sustainable agreement” on Okinawa and Guam.

2011 Nissan Leaf – Click above for high-res image gallery

We’ve met the Nissan Leaf before. First at its coming-out party in Japan, followed by an all-too-brief stint behind the wheel of a Versa-based prototype late last year. Now we’ve had a chance to sample Nissan’s first foray into the world of electric vehicles in production form and the automaker picked one of its most important markets – the heart of Silicon Valley – to give us some seat time.

If there’s any area ripe for early-EV adoption, it’s San Jose Tattoo Supplies, CA. And during a quick test loop through the tight confines of Santana Row and a run through the city’s suburban surrounds Tattoo Supplies, it’s obvious that the first mass-produced EV is officially ready for prime-time.

The Detroit Auto Show is coming up. After that, we go to the Chicago Auto Show. Then New York and maybe Geneva. We are going to hob-knob with most of the auto industry titans: CEOs, Design Chiefs Cheap BCBG Dresses, Product Development Bosses.

We will be at dinners, group interviews, one-on-one interviews and members of the media will have time “on the sidelines” with these decision makers, sometimes without their pubic relations handlers listening in Discount Marc Jacobs Dresses, trying to keep their bosses from making a headline.

I have a handful of questions for companies and executives I plan to ask. And the rest of the Autoblog staff is jotting up their notebooks with interview appointments and questions they want to ask. But how about you, dear readers Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, chiming in with yours? We’ll do our best to get them answered.

My Questions:

1. For Volkswagen AG CEO Martin Winterkorn: Why all the rhetoric on sales goals? You want one million VWs and Audis sold in North America by 2018. Why? How about getting quality ratings going in the right direction first? VW quality scores have actually fallen in the last two years. Shouldn’t quality be “Job One Buy DKNY Clothing,” to quote an old Ford ad slogan? Making it so much about sales seems like a recipe for driving the entire organization toward the wrong goal. Take care of quality and pricing, and sales will take care of themselves.

2. For Honda Motor CEO Takanobu Ito: When is Honda going to re-assert leadership in powertrains? I can still feel what a CVCC engine was like to drive. I can close my eyes and remember the beautiful gearbox on the manual transmission. We just aren’t seeing this sort of leadership from Honda anymore, at least not in the U.S.

Are you serious about hybrids or not? The Accord Hybrid was a “non-starter.” And the new Insight is a yawn Buy Karen Millen Dresses, even for a hybrid. Are you serious about EVS, or not? You said you were going to bring a diesel engine – your wonderful diesel sold in Europe – to the States, only to kill the idea. I would suggest that there is no sound business case to be made for General Motors bringing out the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric. But the fact that it did shows that the company is seizing a leadership position trying to change the story about how we drive.

And your design department? Have you looked around a Honda showroom lately? The Ridgeline is a bust. The Element was close to a bust. The CR-Z is a puzzle whose early sales suggest it’s a bust, too. I can’t find any reason to tell someone they should put it on their list. The Accord Crosstour is not awful BCBG Dresses sale, but that’s the best I can say. Yes, you own the subcompact crossover market with the CR-V. The Accord is the Accord. The Civic remains strong, but we want a five-door variant back in the showroom. The Odyssey is a pleasure among minivans. But there some big misses here for every hit you turn out.

But most of all, we want something from Honda we can get psyched about. What do you have to say?

Cheap Hale Bob Dresses
Johnny Depp now has yet another reason to smile. The actor recently finished up work on the theatrical interpretation of the Hunter S. Thompson novel Herve Leger sale, Rum Diary. Depp plays journalist Paul Kemp in 1950’s Puerto Rico as the writer attempts to survive an abundance of alcohol Cheap Hale Bob Dresses, powerful figures and Discount Herve Leger v neck, of course Replica DKNY Clothing, a dangerously attractive young lady. Hilarity ensues. A number of period vehicles play a prominent role in the film, including a Fiat 500 and, perhaps more notably Herve Leger v neck sale, a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. Producer Graham King decided to give the latter vehicle to Depp as a token of his appreciation for the actor’s work on the film.

Talk about a bonus.

Depp was apparently properly enthusiastic about the gift, having grown attached to the vehicle during filming. Hit the jump to check out the trailer for the film for yourself. Rum Diary hits theaters October 28.

Gen. David Petraeus

The globe will resume spinning on its axis when Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker deliver their long-awaited report on conditions in Iraq. (You may have noticed that the Bush administration has put off all decisions, about everything, pending this fateful event.)

Two things are worth noting in advance. First Hale Bob Dresses sale, according to Petraeus’ spokesman, there will be no report per se. The word is being taken as a verb Replica Chanel Dresses, not a noun; that is, the general and the ambassador will report to Congress, testifying before the House on Monday, the Senate on Tuesday, and, as a follow-up, the National Press Club on Wednesday.

Second, if Petraeus and Crocker decide to go beyond the predictable bromides (x is improving, y is slightly worsening, z is pretty much the same), they would do well to let us in on the status not only of Iraq but also of American strategy.

The surge will be over in April 2008, when the U.S. Army and Marines run out of deployable troops, and therefore at least a quarter of the 20 brigades now in Iraq will inevitably be withdrawn and not replaced. This is by now common knowledge. At the same time, nearly all politicians, including most Democrats Discount Chanel Dresses, have come out against a total withdrawal and have recognized that we will have some military presence in Iraq for a long time to come.

So, the questions that Congress should make sure Petraeus and Crocker answer are these: After the surge, what? What is the new strategy? What are the core missions of U.S. forces? Where should they go, and what should they do there? What can they accomplish, with a fair chance of success Cheap Herve Leger gown, at reduced levels? And what is the meaning of success?

In recent weeks, Gen. Petraeus has frequently said that he is making “tactical progress.” He will no doubt recite the phrase a few more times next week. It’s important to be clear on what the phrase means and what it doesn’t mean.

It means that military progress is being made in the fight against al-Qaida in Mesopotamia and related jihadist movements, especially in Anbar province but also in such other erstwhile strongholds as Baqubah, Ramadi, and a few neighborhoods around Baghdad.

This is salutary and significant. But it has nothing to do with the surge. And it has at best little effect on the political goals of the war—to create order, protect the civilian population, and help bring about a stable, self-sustaining, self-defending, at least somewhat democratic government of Iraq.

Gen. Petraeus has noted (as would any good officer who’s read Clausewitz) that military victory is hollow without the accomplishment of the war’s political objectives. He has also said that some political objectives are a subset of others—that, for instance, the main reason for protecting the people of Baghdad is to create a secure environment, some “breathing space” that might allow Iraq’s political factions to reconcile and form a unified government.

If there is little chance that these factions can reconcile Marc Jacobs Dresses sale, then the military operations are futile. And, in the scheme of the fissures now racking Iraq, the defeat of AQM—while worthwhile in its own right—amounts to a bit of a sideshow.

However, the operations in Anbar Replica Christian Audigier Clothing, Baqubah, and Ramadi do have another virtue, in the context of next week’s testimony: They are activities in which U.S. military power can play a dominant, even a determinant, role. Gen. Petraeus will probably emphasize these operations not just because they’ve been successful (as few operations in Iraq have been), but also because they are something that he, as commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, can control or at least directly affect.

Crocker is in a tougher spot: He has to outline the prospects for Iraq’s political success. Baghdad’s ramshackle central government seems to offer little hope in this regard. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is too beholden to Shiite parties that unalterably oppose sharing power with Sunnis, and this fact further radicalizes the Sunnis. Meanwhile, several Iraqi army units—and nearly all the police forces—are rife with corruption and driven more by sectarian than by national loyalties.

Jaeger LeCoultre Replica Watches
According to our recent and completely unscientific poll, the majority of our readership prefers the Subaru BRZ to its kissing cousin Imitation Burberry Watches, the Toyota GT 86. Just about half of those who clicked an opinion on our poll sided with the Subie, while the remainder were split – a quarter went with the Toyota and a quarter said the two cars were so similar that it didn’t matter.

Similar they are, with different grilles, front fascias and badges standing out as the main differentiators. The rest is pretty much the same Alain Silberstein Replica Watches, right down to the front and rear lights. And, according to Automotive News at least, there’s a little bit of Toyota trickery at work in the styling.

Take a close look at the rear of either the GT 86 or BRZ. Incorporating both the reverse lights and a rear foglight in the center between the dual exhaust tips is a distinctive element with a prominent inverted triangle shape. According to Toyota Replica Porsche Design Watches for sale, that design “stands for Toyota’s ‘T’ shape” and is meant to ‘express its identity.’

That’s all well and good, but it’s also present on the Subaru, which is otherwise completely absent of any Toyota badging, for obvious reasons. This is especially noteworthy since Toyota led the car’s styling and bodyshape while Subaru invested its resources on the engine and chassis.

Is there a conspiracy at play? We doubt it. It seems more likely that the rear element is meant to recall nothing more than the safety light on Formula 1 cars Discount Replica Free Gift Watches, and the fact that it’s an inverted triangle is a clever way for Toyota’s marketing team to highlight the dual-headed-machine’s Toyota-bred styling work.

Finally, consider the fact that the Scion FR-S, which is what Toyota’s version of the coupe will be sold as in the United States, also features the exact same rear lighting element. In case you hadn’t noticed… there’s no ‘T’ in Scion Replica BMW Watches, either.
